Halloween is upon us again and it isn’t just the ghosts and ghouls that are scary. One of the frightening things that comes along with the holiday is all of the sugary snacks. With the goal of removing excess Halloween candy from kids while supporting our troops, Operation Gratitude sends kids’ Halloween candy to active military members. Another way to help our little monsters from eating too much candy on Halloween is to fill their bellies with good stuff before they head out for trick-or-treating. Here are just a few fun and spooky recipe ideas.

Witches’ Broomsticks

You’ll need: Reduced-fat mozzarella cheese sticks, Pretzel sticks, Chives

Directions: To make the broom, slice the mozzarella stick across in thirds. Use a knife or scissors to cut a fringe pattern on the lower half of the cheese. Insert a pretzel stick into the cheese, making the broomstick, and tie a chive around the top.

Haunted Pizza

You’ll need: 1 package whole-wheat pizza dough, 1 cup pizza sauce, 1 block reduced-fat or skim mozzarella cheese or any cheese of your choice, sliced, Black olives, chopped

Directions: Preheat oven to 350°F. Roll out pizza dough into desired shape and place on baking sheet or pizza stone. Spread pizza sauce on top and bake for 10 minutes. While pizza is baking, use a ghost-shaped cookie cutter to cut ghosts from the cheese of your choice. Remove pizza from oven, arrange cheese ghosts on top with olive slices for eyes, and return to the oven for 5 minutes (or until cheese has melted).

Veggie Skeleton

You’ll need: Veggie dip, Celery sticks, Baby carrots, Mushrooms (sliced), Cucumbers, (cut into rounds), Pea pods, A few lettuce leaves, Pimiento olives, Red bell pepper

Directions: Scoop veggie dip into a small bowl and place at the top of a long platter. Begin to build the skeleton by arranging veggies: a celery stick for the neck, baby carrots for the arms, mushrooms for the hands, cucumbers for the spine, red pepper slices as the ribs, mushrooms for the hips, celery for the legs, and pea pods for the feet. Give your skeleton hair with lettuce leaves, eyes with olives, and a mouth with a sliver of red pepper.
