The 4th of July is the next big holiday and it usually includes bbq, fatty side dishes and beer/cocktails. You may be thinking to yourself, “It’s going to be tough to stick to my meal plan.” Not going to lie, the smell and sight of that cheeseburger or hotdog will be tempting, but you’ve got this! Try some of these healthy Tips & Tricks for the 4th of July.
We know, you’ve heard this a million times but that’s because it’s so vital. When you’re dehydrated it’s easy to mistake thirst for hunger, which can lead to questionable food choices and overeating. Alcohol consumption can also lead to dehydration. So if you decide to partake, opt for lower calorie selections and be sure to drink water in between each alcoholic drink.
Enjoy the Grill
Grilling things can make them taste better and renders off some fat (unless it’s soaked in oil or covered in cheese). If available, try choosing skinless chicken breast, lean turkey burgers and veggie skewers.
Bring Your Own Smart Dish
By contributing to the party, you will know that there will be at least one nutritious dish for you to enjoy. Need some ideas? Check out these Healthy Barbecue Salads & Sides from Cookie and Kate.
Avoid Those Mayo-Heavy Side Dishes
Many bbq’s include sides that are laden with mayonnaise. 1 cup of pasta or macaroni salad made with mayo can contain up to 360 calories! It’s just not worth it.
Cool Things Off With Healthy Frozen Treats
It’s no secret that July gets pretty hot. This can make ice cream and frozen drinks even more tempting but some varieties are really high in fat and calories. Instead, opt for smarter choices like natural fruit bars or drinks that aren’t filled with sugary syrups. Try Outshine Frozen Fruit Bars or make your own Homemade Fruit Popsicles.
Join in that volleyball game, take a swim or throw a frisbee around for a bit. Getting a little physical activity is great for you and can be fun too! Just be sure to stay hydrated.
Don’t Forget The Sunscreen
This isn’t really associated with your nutrition but skin health is important as well. Also, if you get a sunburn, it may keep you from your normal routine or exercises.
After all, that’s why we get together with friends and family, right? Plus, if you are busy interacting and joining in the festivities then you will be less likely to hang out in front of the food table.
